Inside versus outside English

Inside and Outside English

fundamentals
The thirty-second answer

Inside English is on the side toward the object-ball cut; outside is on the opposite side. These describe the cut, while running/reverse describe a cushion contact.

Learn the movement.

First name the object-ball cut from the shooter’s view. Then identify which side of the cue ball receives the tip. The same left contact can be inside on one cut and outside on its mirror.

A cushion may appear later in the route, but it does not define inside and outside. Keep the cut relationship and cushion relationship separate.

Try it

One useful set.

Setup & action
Label the cut first and the cushion separately.
What to watch
Describe the result, the miss pattern, and one thing to try next.
Practice format
10 attempts is a starting suggestion. Record the pattern, not just the best one.

A common complication.

Using outside and running as if they were synonyms.

Change one thing

Label the cut first and the cushion separately.

What changes the result?

Distance, pace, contact point, spin at collision, balls, cloth, and execution can all matter. Keep the basic setup consistent before comparing one change. An exact-looking line is not evidence of an exact physical prediction.
